Summit Picnic 2009 – Where The Hell is Topeka ? I was dubious about going to a park in Topeka, Kansas for the Summit, Picnic. Where the hell is Topeka? And what will the facilities be like in a little town in the middle of nowhere? Okay, Summit is over and I have my answers. Columbia picnics will have to be upgraded. This little park in the middle of Topeka was just fine, and, it was not so little. While I took care of the business end, Rhonda found a huge Rose garden. She has pictures to prove it’s worth. She also found a zoo. A what, you ask? Yeah, that’s right they have a zoo. Our pavilion was just next to the kid’s area and just next to the swimming pool. I am not sure, any of these facilities were used but what the heck, it’s sure nice to know they are available. Now let’s get down to brass tacks, and to the fact that our pavilion was air conditioned. Those who thought, why should I go to a picnic? It was indoors. I had a good time and it was comfortable. The facilities were outside and across the walk a ways, but other than that, it was all so very convenient and kept up pretty well. To our hosts, I can only say, I know where Topeka is now. Gage Park is a fine place for a picnic and thanks for having us. From our stand point, we drove to Kansas City, and spent the night. In the morning, we finished our drive to Topeka. It took about an hour and a half. It’s not that far. Any trip into Kansas is best started after a good night’s stay in KC. We chose the Stadium Drury and it was a fine facility for the price range. We were also able to try KC’s premiere Soul Food establishment, Peachtree Buffet, and it was good enough. Unfortunately, it was not Sweetie Pie’s. They are in a class of their own. After eating at Sweetie Pie’s, all the rest are just, good. All in all the trip was well worth it and I wish more of our chapter could have come. If not for the meeting, then for the roses and the zoo. |
Star Trek XI: At the Movies How has Star Trek done? Well, they are talking sequel. It did 79 Million in the first weekend and 36 Million in foreign box office. 8.5 Million of the amount was in IMAX and that is a new record for the first weekend. This movie has beaten “First Contact” which grossed 30.72 Million in its first weekend, adjusted for inflation. Of course it was tops for the weekend killing Wolverine. It is hard to beat another top movie during its first weekend when you have been out for at least a week. During the second weekend of the movie, it was beaten by Angels and Demons 46 Million to 43 Million but it won on Sunday. During the second week it moved back into the number one spot. It has also broken the two week IMAX record but its IMAX run has ended. For the third weekend it lost to, Night at the Museum 2 at 54 Million and to Terminator Salvation at 43 Million, but again beat Angels & Demons and Wolverine with 30 Million bringing it’s take through the third weekend to 191 Million Domestically, 280 Million globally, and is now the forth most watched Star Trek Movie ever in only 3 weeks. It is now at 341 million and is the top movie of 2009! I have this to say about the nay sayers, JJ Abrams had the right idea. You may not like where he took Trek, but he took it where “no man has gone before.” Unless Trek conquers the unknown, it is not Trek it is only Sci Fi. This movie may have killed Vulcan and the old way we looked at Trek, but it created an alternate reality and a new life for a dying Fandom.
